About

Ann Zaleski has always felt a strong connection to the beach. Growing up, she spent summer after summer on Long Beach Island, enjoying everything that life here had to offer.  The desire to remain at the beach stayed with her wherever she went. After a career in education, Ann discovered this was not her true calling. In her heart she knew that her ultimate dream was to be managing her own business in her favorite place, Long Beach Island.

It was a natural gravitation to interiors and textiles that brought Ann to her next step in life.  Sewing pillows and window treatments and often recovering her own furniture had been interests of Ann's throughout her life. Up until then, she had really just seen these activities as  a hobby, but  the time had come to build the hobby into her own business.  She was given the opportunity to apprentice with an interior decorator from whom she learned every aspect of the business including re-upholstery and window-treatment fabrication.  As her apprenticeship came to an end, Ann realized that she had found the job she had been dreaming about. It was time to strike out on her own.

And so, in 2003, she combined her skills with her beach-loving instincts and started her new business. In a small garage, with not much more than a sewing machine and a coffee maker, The Red Chair was born. It began as a small operation, but grew quickly. Through word of mouth and a reputation for top-quality work, The Red Chair became a popular destination for those who were looking to beautifully decorate their houses.  Within a few years, growing demand and previous success made it possible for The Red Chair to move into a larger studio and workshop at the Sink r’ Swim Shops.  In 2006, Ann’s partner Paula Robinson joined the team. Ever since, they've been working successfully together and the Red Chair has continued to grow, including a move two blocks south to a bigger space where The Red Chair retail was established.  Now clients of the design and workroom areas of the business have a complementary home accessories and furniture selection at their fingertips.

The two ladies have continued to build the business around a central philosophy, the key to the best design is to keep it simple yet personal.  Using a subtle, New England-style design scheme, The Red Chair gives its clients all the guidance they need to create sometimes whimsical, yet fresh, functioning  interiors for any beach house, large or small.
